Learning Objectives

At the completion of this tour:

Participants will learn how the organization of space and architectural detailing promotes the relationship between indoors and outdoors creates a sense of place in the landscape.

Participants will gain insight into the architectural concepts and key design details driving this project including siting, form, organization, fenestration, and selection of materials.

Participants will define best practices for cost effective sustainable design, including siting, daylighting, shading, and cross-ventilation.

Participants will examine the use of vernacular forms to inform sustainable design practices.

Brinegar House – Durham – 1 HSW

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this tour:

Participants will learn how the organization of space and architectural detailing promotes the relationship between indoors and outdoors creates a sense of place in the landscape.

Participants will gain insight into the architectural concepts and key design details driving this project including siting, form, organization, fenestration, and selection of materials.

Participants will consider landscape design practices, use of street and hardscape form throughout the site, siting and topography that minimized impact to existing grading, and orientation to the sun and open spaces.

Participants will understand the importance of building orientation, roof form, and fenestration..

Medlin Residence – Raleigh – 1 HSW

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this tour:

Participants will learn how the organization of space and architectural detailing promotes the relationship between indoors and outdoors creates a sense of place in the landscape.

Participants will gain insight into the architectural concepts and key design details driving this project including siting, form, organization, fenestration, and selection of materials.

Participants will examine siting within floodplain constraints and the effects on program goals. Participants also will develop strategies for designing on sites with floodplains.

Participants will identify strategies for efficient, site appropriate and sustainable landscape design.

Trott Residence – Durham – 1 HSW

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this tour:

Participants will learn how the organization of space and architectural detailing promotes the relationship between indoors and outdoors creates a sense of place in the landscape.

Participants will gain insight into the architectural concepts and key design details driving this project including siting, form, organization, fenestration, and selection of materials.

Participants will define best practices for sustainable design, including the use of green roofs and solar arrays.

Participants will examine the design principles of historic neighborhoods. Participants will learn how innovative materials and construction techniques can be used within historic context.

Del Rosso Residence – Chapel Hill – 1 HSW

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this tour:

Participants will learn how the organization of space and architectural detailing promotes the relationship between indoors and outdoors creates a sense of place in the landscape.

Participants will gain insight into the architectural concepts and key design details driving this project including siting, form, organization, fenestration, and selection of materials.

Participants will examine the use of vernacular forms to inform natural daylighting strategies.

Participants will learn about and identify building envelope design strategies used in this project to create a more energy efficient building.
